The women that hate shopping because it's too tedious will hopefully find some peace in knowing what they're looking for.  The 20 somethings that enjoy shopping, this may also help you stop impulse shopping.  Also you can really take the time to look at your wardrobe and what you already own.

They key factors in shopping smart are:  Know what you need, Be sure about it, Dress for Action, Buy Classics, Calculate the costs, Avoid the Crowds, Mix and Match, Know Yourself, Feel Chipper, and Go with Neutrals.  These keys are fantastic for the women who hate shopping and the one's that can't get enough.

The Breakdown:

Know What You Need:  This by far the most important lesson in shopping.  Go through your wardrobe, and if you see a pattern of missing items (i.e. dress, boots, sweaters, handbag, hat, etc.) you might just need those.  Make a list of the items you need and this will give you a starting point to go out shopping with.

    MUSTS

Be Sure About It:  Be sure in your decision making, that this is worth it, ask yourself, "Do you love it?" "Does it look great on me?" "Will I wear it?"

Dress for Action:  Wear clothes that are easy to put on and take off, avoid clothes that you have to squeeze into no matter how much you love it.  It's never worth it to buy clothes that you can't actually wear.  If you have to ask yourself, "does this look too tight?" then it probably means your shouldn't buy it.

Buy Classics:  When in doubt, always buy classic pieces instead of trendier items, they last longer in your wardrobe for the price.  Such as the classic little black dress (LBD), white dress shirt, 3-piece suit (skirt, pants, blazer), black pumps, trench coat, jeans and a handbag.

Calculate the Cost:  Factor in the cost per wear and how many seasons you'll actually wear it.  This is a key factor when choosing an item, always ask yourself, "Is this worth the money?" "Is it something you'll ever wear again?"

Avoid the Crowds:  When you go shopping try to go during the week and avoid the crowds, believe it or not there are many sales that take place during the week so avoid the weekends and over bearing salespeople, they tend to influence you on buying something you might not have ever wanted in the first place.

Mix and Match:  It's basic, take one shirt and try to pair it with many bottoms (shorts, skirts, pants, capris).  Mixing and Matching can get you along way especially in your wallet.
The example below is of a navy sweater paired to make many outfits.

Know Yourself:  You should be honest with yourself on which garments flatter your body type.  Try not to fit into something that you think others will like better, know your body type and stick to what you know.

Feel Chipper:  Don't shop when your feeling upset, having nothing to do, you're hungry, tired or on a short time crunch these habits will only cost you in the end and you'll buy things that might not be completely thought out.

Go with Neutrals:  When you're buying inexpensive items go with neutrals, they're the best to mix and match with and there is something classic about them.
